The melodies are bold, new, and warlike, of a peculiarity which I find in those of no other German part-songs; and 1 conceive it impossible for any one to be ever so inured to excitement, ever so remote from those sympathies which breathe and burn throughout partisan nationality, to listen to these without such emotion as perhaps can be awakened neither by nature alone nor by art alone, but by the intimate union of the two, formed accidentally in some momentous juncture, thenceforth perfect and indissoluble. |
